Features Song Lyrics for Deniece Williams's Niecy album.
Deniece Williams (born June Deniece Chandler; June 3, 1951) is an American singer, songwriter and producer. Williams has been described as "one of the great soul voices" by the BBC. Williams has won four Grammys with twelve nominations altogether. Born in Gary, Indiana, Williams attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, in the hopes of becoming a registered nurse and an anesthetist, but dropped out after a year and a half.
Deniece Williams spent the first half of the '70s establishing herself as a background vocalist for an impressive line of artists, including Stevie Wonder, Minnie Riperton, Roberta Flack, and Esther Phillips. Though she'd continue to do session work throughout her career, she also became accomplished as a solo artist. The songs that would eventually make up her debut, This Is Niecy, were sent to Earth, Wind & Fire. Williams didn't intend to make her own album and thought these songs would be a good fit for Philip Bailey. Instead, she got to record them with most of EW&F, including Maurice White and Charles Stepney as producers, Verdine White on bass, Freddie White on drums, those glorious horns, and several other associates of the group.
Free" is a 1976 song by Deniece Williams which was included on her album This Is Niecy. The song was written by Williams, Hank Redd, Nathan Watts and Susaye Greene and produced by Maurice White and Charles Stepney. Free" was Williams' breakthrough single as it got to No. 2 on the US Billboard R&B and No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts The single also rose to No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart almost 2 years later, for 2 weeks, in May 1977.

For her album, Niecy had to make do with the next best thing, Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire fame and together with the assistance of coproducer Charles Stepney and EWF for instrumental backing, came up with this quite beautiful and wonderful album. The production really is exquisite, every element of the band, from brass to percussion, strings to bass, shining brightly in the service of some delectable music. In the summer of 1976 Columbia Records finally release ex-Wonderlove vocalist Deniece Williams debut album. Produced by Maurice White of Earth Wind & Fire and Charles Stepney this turned out to be a very stunning debut and was one truly one of the best debuts of 1976. After singing in Stevie Wonder’s background group Wonderlove from 72-74 Niecy finally steps out on her own and showed why she deserved to be a solo act.
