Grand Drive – Road Music. Genre: Rock, Folk, World, & Country. Style: Alternative Rock, Country Rock. Road Music (CD, Album). RCA Victor, BMG UK & Ireland.
Grand Drive's brothers Danny Wilson (lead vocals/guitar) and Julian Wilson (keyboards) were originally from Australia, but grew up in the stony southwest London suburb of Sutton in the '70s. In school, they met bassist Ed Balch and formed their first group, Soul Green, with several temporary drummers. Grand Drive then came to the attention of Tom Bridgewater and Mark Rogers' London-based Loose Recordings (launched in 1998 with their genre-defining New Sounds of the Old West compilations). Loose issued their Wrong Notes EP in December 1998 and, in April 1999, compiled their first album, Road Music, from the three previously released EPs and two singles.
The first single released from the album, "Mean Mistreater", was released on November 23 and the second, "Inside Looking Out", was released in January 1971. The album was originally released as a double album on the LP format. Subsequent reissues of the album on the compact disc format have been both double and single disc sets.
After their Road Music debut hitched a lift on the al. ountry bandwagon, Grand Drive have commandeered their own vehicle, al. oul. With the harmonising Wilson brothers yearning for their lives, the band emerge sounding like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes after an eternity in a battered Transit listening to Mercury Rev. The songs here are their most rewarding yet. Hammonds rumble, slide guitars shimmer like rhinestones and songs are full of warmth and impossible dreams (the girl in Firefly who wishes upon the stickers on her wall, the doomed lovers who take on the world in You and I). They.
