Philharmonischer Chor Munchen & Philharmonie Festiva, Gerd Schaller. a superb pendant to his recently completed cycle of the symphonies . Philharmonischer Chor München, Philharmonie Festiva. Ania Vegry (soprano), Timo Riihonen (bass), Franziska Gottwald (contralto), Clemens Bieber (tenor).
st and performer Gerd Schaller playing six works on the Eisenbarth organ in the Abteikirche. The first great merit here is the sound quality: there is an angelic aureola of warmth about it, excellent balance between the mighty forces deployed, tremendous dynamic range and no loss of detail despite the reverberance of the venue. The Psalm is a decided rarity. Were it not for the fact that we have Bruckner’s manuscript score, published as recently as 1996, I would defy anyone without foreknowledge of its composer to ascribe it correctly, it is so wholly uncharacteristic of his oeuvre. Indeed, it positively reeks of Mendelssohn’s oratorios at their most blithely insouciant.
Months later, Bruckner's Gloria and F Minor Mass followed, showcasing Schaller's impeccable ability to choose a concert venue. The former Cistercian monastery of Ebrach being the venue of choice. Schaller follwed the F Minor Mass with a largely unknown Psalm 146 which only recently premiered in 1971. platico 21 October 2017 17:04.
The cycle of symphonies is supplemented by the F minor Mass, the rarely performed Psalm 146 and his organ works. To crown the Bruckner cycle, the unfinished Ninth has been recorded twice, augmented by a different finale each time: once with the final movement added by William Carragan and once with Gerd Schallers own recreation of the finale.
