9. I’ve Got My Eyes On You. More albums from James Mason: Recollection ∈ Echo by James Mason.

James Mason only made one album, that got acclaim years after its release. Rhythm Of Life became a soul-jazz cult classic, recorded around 1978/79 with musicians such as Narada Michael Walden and Gene Torres, and featuring Clarice Taylor’s beautiful, characteristic vocals. The t recorded far more tracks around the release of Rhythm Of Life, but his music became out of fashion because musical trends shifted.

Juuuuust the worst, best to be avoided. Got an incredible sounding Japanese CD instead ... what a mind blowing different listening experience.

Hi Rick, I'm not too sure what you're disagreeing with. But yep (aside from your numbers) your comments are accurate. Wow!! 50 sealed copies, is a great one off find (I doubt whether anyone else found similar a haul), even in the eighties when only UK collectors were interested in this album. Thanks for clarifying further checkable info people can use to find out if they have the original. BTW the originals were pressed in just one run and was never repressed. The fairly recent Japanese 'Shout! Productions' reissue of the LP and 7" promos were limited to 1000 copies as Shout! wanted to mirror the production and original release of the album and promo 7"s as closely as possible therefore James Mason supervised the reissue personally. So yes I also agree 1000 (total number of LP and 7"s together and NOT JUST the LP) are likely to have been pressed. Considering a fair number of those copies are likely to have been 'junked' as you put it. I suppose this vindicates my view that true originals are a pretty rare find nowadays. Maybe there were more around during the 80's, but I still doubt, considering the likelyhood years of attrition etc, there is much more than 100 genuine original pressings floating around.

Hi Alan, don't think it's as rare as you think, I found 50+ copies of it in the U.S. at various locations in the late 80's exactly as you describe - in one-stop distributors (sealed) or the occasional shop, (cut outs) with the tell-tale Dennis King mastering stamp on the A-side. There is another shape stamped on both sides that I can only describe as looking like an open book ? Have to look it up; maybe the metalwork processing plant stamp. I think it's likely there were 1000 pressed as an initial, probably had a re-press too - but that's peanuts for a territory as big as the US. Many of the cutouts also showed slight signs of water damage so it's possible some got junked..
grand star
LONDON is where the cult of 'Rhythm of Life' really begun to explode, during the glorious Jazz-Funk years of the early eighties. No one was remotely interested in this album until then. During that period, you could still travel to the USA and find this (if you were lucky) normally gathering dust in 'mom and pops' stores or distributor warehouses, where many neglected and forgotten vinyl releases saw their final days for $2 and less. (The irony of today's world where many are now as sought after holy grails :-) Today, 40 years later.....Thank you to ALL the London based pirate radio, street DJ's and collectors for one of the greatest finds in modern black music.

Bootleg or not - it sounds mono and much worse than any (bad) youtube rip.As already mentioned: Disappointing.
Rocky Basilisk
Over 300 people say they have this. I very much doubt most have the original and it's more a case of wishful thinking or at worst they copped a bootleg thinking it's original.. This album is truly so rare, I don't think there's more than 100 genuine copies worldwide, and of those maybe one or two without deletion marks. Out of the seven on sale at the moment, I doubt even half are genuine original copies. So yes it is rare, but finding a genuine 1st press is a lottery as the run-outs are notoriously difficult to read. But whatever you do, if you wish to buy an original pressing, make sure the run-outs match with the genuine ones in the sub!
Urtte
Yep - got this new reissue from a reputable dealer. Reissue claiming Chiaroscuro Records CR 189 on cover, labels and vinyl etching. Nice heavy vinyl, nice labels and authentic looking packaging, but sound is virtually MONO so does not sound impressive at all compared to stereo versions on promos for recent release on you tube that are clearly in stereo and sound a lot better. Disappointing.
Kigabar
Can anyone comment on the quality of this repress? cheers
Samuhn
fonkyfeet Well thanks for that, but what about the sound quality? Scorpio re-issues are usually very cheap but do not have good sound quality. Flat / lifeless sound. I imagine for a few dollars more the quality could be much nicer.
Skillet
Well thanks for that, but what about the sound quality?
Wizard
All 8th Records pressings are bought from Scorpio, and repackaged. Traffic Entertainment put a barcode sticker over the Rhino/Scorpio sticker on the back. Maybe they’ve started taking the Scorpio stickers off.
uspeh
Do yourself a favor and save up some money for the older Sure shot reissue from 93. The sound difference is very much notable, if you ask me.
Arlana
Fantastic record, can't be THAT rare with 13 copies for sale, $300+, all nearly in the same condition?? September 2nd, 2017. Thanks Discogs!
Dynen
Thank the record buying market; a view from the seller side.... It is worth the price tag because the record is a gem.
Risky Strong Dromedary
Better keep your hands away from that copy! I just compared this (bootleg) reissue with the proper Sureshot reissue and the Sureshot sounds way much better!!! Really big sound difference!

'Sweet Power Your Embrace' is the kind of song you will never get tired of hearing. That's why it was absolutely impossible to avoid asking James himself about his glorious all time Masterpiece:"I used an ARP Odyssey. I wanted to use an ARP 2600 but didn’t have access to one at the time. I spent a good deal of time programming that sound but fell short of the nuance I might have achieved with the 2600. I worked out the composition using the Arp for the Bass, and a Fender Rhodes for the harmony. I filled in the rest via overdubs.I know I was influenced by Weather Report and the introduction is similar to Birdland, but the groove and harmonic approach I wanted was very different. When I developed the song I was working with Dwayne Purdue, but when it came time to record he was unexpectedly unavailable. Narada Michael Walden had a different style and was not able to give me the groove I was looking for. I was so set on a achieving different feeling for that song that we did it over and over — and I almost wiped the performance that ended up on the record. Phil Clendeninn literally jumped in front of the multitrack and refused to let me record over it. Ultimately, what Narada he did was so spectacular, especially with the ending, that it was fortunate that he rather than Dwayne was on that session."

daftcombo Interesting, but... which song is this piece of interview about? Sorry, will include it now: 'Sweet Power Your Embrace'

Supposed to be Ultra rare, there are 10 for sale from different Sellers going for obscure prices and if there are 10 for sale I don't know how rare this is. I've seen Records in demand which only once in a while come up for sale going for much less and that raises some questions ( and yes, I can afford it ) but Viva la Capitalism. 545,00 $ for a copy that is VG, VG is just not near good enough for Vinyl, throw it in the fucking Garbage.
Cordanius
If people are paying $300 for this non-rare record, why should they price it for less?
Error parents
I couldn't agree more. If it's junk it's junk. Frame it and put it on a wall . . . but not for an exorbitant price!
Eigeni
JAMES MASON! The name only gives a "Funkateer" like me goose bumps all over, the album Rhythm Of Life are one of THE album ever!

[Needs no review too good]

The sound quality on this limited edition Japan package as previously mentioned is superb. Pressed on thick virgin vinyl. The sleeve is a high quality printed, heavy thick card design identical to the original release. These Japan copies are identical in every detail to the original release except the reissue cat number SHOUT-246 is discreetly printed underneath the original cat number on the vinyl label disc.By the way, if you're lucky, you may find the Disk Union promos with the LP OBI strip and 7" picture insert showing James Mason posing with a guitar. The retail edition of this LP has a sticker-ed plastic outer sleeve and no picture insert with the bonus 7".The Japan reissue is not to be confused with the more common US or Europe represses. All the SHOUT copies of this album come with the bonus 7" promo and either an OBI strip or sticker-ed sleeve clearly showing it's a Japan reissue. Only a 1000 copies were pressed in total.Hope this helps anyone looking for the quality Japan reissue of this classic album. This Japan reissue is not shrink-wrapped sealed. It only comes in a resealable plastic sleeve/bag.
Jockahougu
Any ideas if this is a bootleg or an official reissue??
Freaky Hook
If it's distributed via the US company Scorpio is more likely a bootleg.
Whiteflame
This isn't a bootleg. It's distributed by Scorpio -- they're notorious for cheap reissues pressed by Rainbo. They've done loads of Blue Note, psych, Latin, soul, and other jazz labels. Often times they reissue albums that are rare and hard to find. The pressings are very hit and miss.
Datrim
My guess is the same. Just listen to it. There is no way the original sounds like this. This is a $10 bootleg all the way. Still better than paying 3-4 bills.
Nanecele
I am obviously guessing but it looks, feels and sounds like a bootleg.
Kanal
that's what I'm wondering. Did you have any luck finding out?
