Comfort of Strangers is English singer-songwriter Beth Orton's fourth studio album, the follow-up to 2002's Daybreaker. The album was recorded in just two weeks at New York's Sear Sound studio in the spring of 2005, with musician and composer Jim O'Rourke as producer. It features Beth on guitar, piano and harmonica with O'Rourke on bass, piano and marimba and the American percussionist Tim Barnes on drums.

Orton's fourth album gives her unique voice the showcase it deserves. Produced by cult musician Jim O'Rourke, Comfort of Strangers is a supple sample of Americana ( Countenance ), jazz ( Worms ), classic 70s AOR ( Heartland Truckstop ) and pastoral chill ( Absinthe ).

After 2002's somber and overdone Daybreaker, it seemed possible that Beth Orton was losing the focus and freshness that made her so compelling on Trailer Park and Central Reservation. How nice, then, it is to hear those qualities in abundance on Comfort of Strangers, which Orton recorded in just two weeks with producer Jim O'Rourke and percussionist Tim Barnes.

On her latest album, Comfort of Strangers, musician Beth Orton moves away from the electronica sound she is known for, relying instead on the simple sounds of her voice and guitar. Comfort of Strangers sounds as if it had been discovered mouldering in a southern attic, or on the jukebox of a "heartland truckstop" similar to the one she sings about, pedal-steel distantly twanging, on a song of that name. It's a safe bet that not many of these 14 country-folk ruminations will turn up as ringtones, if only because, to make sense, Orton needs to be heard at length, rather than as a snippet. Even then, she only makes a sort of sense. Characteristically singing as if her tongue is too large for her mouth, she trashes the lyrics, which tumble out in a slur. Shopping Trolley and Feral Children could be titles from the next Hard-Fi album, but the songs have less to do with shopping-centre hoodies than with her disjointed musings about, well, something or other. There's no linear narrative here, just fragments of sentences that elude analysis.
