Bad Blood in the City: The Piety Street Sessions is an album by American guitarist James Blood Ulmer recorded in New Orleans at the Piety Street Recording Studios and released on the Hyena label in 2007.
For those who were rightfully seduced by James Blood Ulmer's 2005 Birthright recording, where the great harmolodic jazz, blues, and funk guitarist played a single guitar and stomped on a board and played the blues like a Delta hoodoo shaman, Bad Blood in the City will come as quite a shock. The session was recorded at the Piety Street Studios in New Orleans, and Blood made use of its atmospherics and its history as a killer room for recording the Crescent City's second-line rhythms, electric blues, and swampy funk. He echoes the hypocrisy that some rather famous ministers railed on the city as being a den of sin and the hurricane being God's vengeance.

The album’s final track, Old Slave Master, is an Ulmer original stomper that lets his feelings shine through – and it’s not for the faint of heart! While there are tough songs here, the covers are also inspired. John Lee Hooker’s This Land is No One’s Land is an amazing piece that resonates as well as ever. While Ulmer has a unique voice, it’s a reminder of Hooker’s influence on him. Willie Dixon’s Dead Presidents is given a rollicking treatment with a great vocal and fine fiddle solo from Burnham.
