Genius of Modern Music: Volume 2 is the name given to at least four different compilation albums by jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Each version comprises some of Monk's recordings as a band leader for Blue Note, recorded between 1947 and 1952 (or in the case of the CDs, just 1951 and 1952). The original LP with this title was compiled in 1952. Two different CD compilations have been given this title.
The second volume in this two-disc series displays Thelonious Monk coming into his own fully as a leader. The program consists almost entirely of original compositions, and in fact it opens with two of his most difficult: "Four in One" (with its conventional bop intro that leads into a bizarre, repeated five-against-two quintuplet sequence) and the forbiddingly abstract "Criss Cross.

Genius of Modern Music: Volume 1 is the name given to at least four different compilation albums by jazz pianist Thelonious Monk. Each version comprises some of Monk's first recordings as band leader for Blue Note, recorded in 1947 (and sometimes 1948). The original LP with this title was compiled in 1951.
The album is divided into two sessions with alternate takes included with the first being a Quintet comprising Monk, piano, Sahib Shihab on alto saxophone, Milt Jackson on vibes, Al McKinnon, bass and Art Blakey is drumming. The first composition is Four In One with Monk opening and quickly inserting the compositions theme with Sahib on alto providing quite a distinct sound to accompany Monk’s piano, with a solo to follow each with Milt Jackson’s vibes included last.

Note:
The one Milt Jackson session and six Thelonious Monk sessions, which were originally issued in part and in scrambled form on BLP 1509, 1510 and 1511. For the Compact Disc editions of these albums, the sessions have been put into their complete forms in recording order. Therefore none of these CDs conform with the original albums and they do have a great deal of additional material.
The classic Blue Note albums which span the mid 1950's to late 1960's were recorded directly on to two track analog tape.
No multitrack recording was used and consequently no mixing was required.
Therefore, this CD was made by transferring the one step analog master to digital.
