Messe pour Notre-Dame. Trinity College Choir, Cambridge, Stephen Layton. 8. Élévation (organ improvisation). Messe pour Notre-Dame.
David Briggs studied with Jean Langlais in Paris and was profoundly influenced by the playing of Pierre Cochereau, Organist Titulaire at Notre Dame Cathedral (1955-1984), from an early age. Briggs was the first British winner of the Tournemire Prize at the St Alban’s International Organ Improvisation Competition. He is Organist Emeritus of Gloucester Cathedral, where he directed the music for eight years. He is renowned worldwide for his brilliant improvisations and is also a prolific composer. This disc includes Briggs’ Messe pour Notre Dame, and features four movements of David Briggs’ own.

David Briggs - Organ Recitalist, Composer, Conductor and Improviser. David Briggs (b1962) has come to the rescue with this jaw-dropping Mass for Notre-Dame, composed in 2002. The choral writing is just stunning in its rich harmonic colors, adventurous intervals, long flowing lines and cathedral filling 'grandeur'.

This is a mass with a difference: not only does it have four interpolated organ improvisations as part and parcel of the setting, but also composer David Briggs estimates that 15 per cent of the scored material is 'sampled' from organ improvisations by Pierre Cochereau, a player Briggs revered and was heavily influenced by. The result, far from feeling derivative, is highly distinctive, and benefits from the sensational organ playing of Briggs himself, drawing sounds of roaring, surging eloquence and grandeur from the splendid instrument at Gloucester Cathedral
David Briggs is well known as a supremely talented improviser: on another disc I have him improvising a Prelude and Fugue in the style of Buxtehude and I'm still not wholly convinced that Buxtehude didn't actually write it, so brilliant is the improvisation!! He is a devotee of that other master of improvisation, Pierre Cochereau, and his liturgical improvisations reflect Cochereau's influence but Briggs speaks with his own mind. The central work however is choral and a composition, written to be performed in Notre Dame. The Mass contains the traditional movements, interspersed. Conductor: Stephen Layton.
