This requiem is very intimate, almost introverted. It is music, like the 16th century music Liszt used as his model, that is designed for quiet reflection, for mediation, for introspection. Most religious work of the late 18th and 19th century seems to follow the Baroque mode while Liszt was eyeing the Renaissance. Liszt's is well known for his piano music, yet his requiem displays his strength in the religious music. This requiem was written for the princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein whom Liszt has a love affair with.
Franz Liszt (Hungarian: Liszt Ferenc) (October 22, 1811 ? July 31, 1886) was a world famous Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist and teacher. Liszt became renowned throughout Europe for his great skill as a performer during the 19th century. He is said to have been the most technically advanced and perhaps greatest pianist of all time.
