King of the Road" is a song written and originally recorded in November 1964 by country singer Roger Miller. The lyrics tell of the day-to-day life of a vagabond hobo who, despite being poor (a "man of means by no means"), revels in his freedom, describing himself humorously as the "king of the road". It was Miller's fifth single for Smash Records. The popular crossover record hit No. 1 on the US Country chart, No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 1 on the Easy Listening surveys

Roger Miller is a name of at least two musicians: 1. A country music singer/songwriter from Oklahoma, USA 2. An alternative rock singer/songwriter from Massachusetts, USA 1) Roger Dean Miller (b. 2 Jan 1936 - d. 25 Oct 1992), was an American singer-songwriter, musician and actor, best known for his honky tonk-influenced novelty songs.
Roger Miller succumbed to cancer in 1992 at age 56. In 1995, the year Miller was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Alan Jackson had a Number One country hit with the songwriter’s Tall, Tall Trees. Brooks & Dunn topped the chart in 1998 with his 1966 hit, Husbands and Wives.
Roger Miller opened two "King of the Road" Motor Inns in the early '70s - one in Nashville, and another in Valdosta, Georgia. Unlike the cheap digs Miller sings about in his song, however, these Motels were billed as "luxury accommodations" and had a very modern motif. At the Nashville location, a music club on the top floor became a popular spot for many local musicians to perform.

If Merle Haggard sums up the dilemma of the American working class from the hard-bitten perspective of "Mama Tried" or "The Bottle Let Me Down," he's called a blue-collar poet. If Roger Miller captures the same predicament from the warped, comic perspective of "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd," he's dismissed as a novelty writer. And yet, a great comic song is just as hard to write as a serious one and sheds just as much light on its subject
