Robin Ticciati will take up his new position with the multi award-winning Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester from the beginning of the 2017-18 season.
This marks the first release with Robin Ticciati leading the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, and it makes the requisite splash. There's a world premiere: even if you're not on board with the trend of enlarging the repertory through arrangements of works that are perfectly good in their original form, you will likely be seduced by mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená's ravishing reading of Debussy's voice-and-piano Ariettes oubliées, inventively arranged by Brett Dean. The two Debussy works are balanced by two of Fauré's: the fourth work is the suite from Fauré's incidental music to Pélleas et Mélisande (in Charles Koechlin's version), also deliberate and lush. Linn recorded the performance in Berlin's Jesus Christus Kirche, which allows the full spectrum of orchestral colors to come through.

Robin Ticciati, music director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, Berlin. Photograph: Marco Borggreve. If you’re used to hearing Robin Ticciati with the fleet-footed Scottish Chamber Orchestra, then the pure heft of this recording – his first as music director of Berlin’s Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester – might take a bit of getting used to. It’s exciting, and it bodes well. Maybe some of the corners aren’t as nimble as they’ll become a few years into his new job, but Fauré’s Prelude to Penelope surges and sweeps, Debussy’s Pelléas and Mélisande suite has a rich, sombre beauty and La Mer sounds robust, brooding and vast. Magdalena Kožená sings Debussy’s Ariettes Oubliées (as orchestrated by Brett Dean) with a steely grandeur. Watch trailer for Debussy/Fauré: La Mer/Pelléas and Mélisande.

Claude Debussy, Brett Dean: Ariettes oubliées - 3. L?ombre des arbres. Claude Debussy, Brett Dean: Ariettes oubliées - 4. Paysages belges. Brett Dean's orchestration of the Ariettes premiered in Sydney in 2015 and at once displayed Debussy's music in a new light. Dean's new arrangements expand on the colours heard in Debussy's original six songs applying unbelievably delicate orchestration that sounds like gossamer; The Daily Telegraph declared it a revelation.
The six Ariettes Oubliées Debussy dedicated to Mary Garden (the first Mélisande) are part of the present recording. Also La mer, which was criticized when it premiered in 1905, is now one of Debussy’s most frequently performed works. As it were not enough, Debussy married Fauré’s former lover Emma Bardac. The present recording includes two works by each composer. Fauré: Prelude to Pénelope and Pelléas et Mélisande. In Ticciati’s rendition, Fauré’s works are marked by soft and intense colours, which are darker in the Prelude and more luminous in the suite. As in the rest of the album, the sound is rich and it allows you to infer all the voices of the instruments. The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin stands out for its fine playing and lustrous tone.
