Volume 1. Bella Union. BNQT (pronounced banquet ) is not a push outside the comfort zone for those involved, but further indication of restlessness from a collection of indie rock lifers, each of whose primary acts made their dent in the blog-rock boom and find their relevance dimming. At that, the optimistically titled Volume 1 serves more to elaborate on its characters than it does to recapture past glory. Midlake’s McKenzie Smith, Joey McClellan, and Jesse Chandler are the chameleonic house band, taking cues from the songs’ originators and finding cohesion in fully-realized arrangements.
Volume 1 is the debut studio album by American alternative rock band CKY. Recorded at The Ground Hog Studios in Holland, Pennsylvania, it was produced, engineered and mixed by guitarist Chad I Ginsburg, and originally released on February 27, 1999 by Distant Recordings and Teil Martin International. Since its initial release under the title Camp Kill Yourself, the album has been reissued a number of times by various record labels with different titles and album covers.
BNQT is made up of the songwriting and vocal talents of five artists: Pulido himself along with Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Travis’ Fran Healy, and Jason Lytle of Grandaddy. Each musician contributed two songs to the project’s debut, often sending material via the Internet to Midlake’s studio in Denton, Texas. Richard Manuel, Harry Nilsson, George Harrison, Buddy Holly. Volume 1 Album Art: Volume 1 Tracklist: 01. Restart 02. Unlikely Force 03.
The BNQT debut album Volume 1 was recorded and self-produced by the band members at Redwood Studios in Denton, Texas and released on 28 April 2017. Each of the five vocalists wrote and sang on two songs each for the album. It received a mainly positive reaction from music critics.
Volume 1 is an enjoyable throwback record fit for fans of any of its members, at least for a few spins, but ultimately it’s less fondue and more cheese plate-still delicious, just not as rich as it could have been.
Don’t call BNQT a supergroup, exactly. Although their brightest lights have dimmed precipitously over the past decade, any assemblage boasting the front men for Band of Horses (Ben Bridwell), Franz Ferdinand (Alex Kapranos), Travis (Fran Healy), and Grandaddy (Jason Lytle) still features starpower aplenty. But the exact nature of their involvement falls somewhat short of even the poor man’s Traveling Wilburys status claimed by Midlake guitarist/BNQT founder Eric Pulido.
Like every successful collaboration, BNQT’s Volume 1 – a title that echoes supergroup forebears the Traveling Wilburys – is much more than the sum of its parts. BNQT (we’re supposed to say Banquet ) is the result of what happened when Eric Pulido of Midlake brought together Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses, Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, Fran Healy of Travis and Jason Lytle of Grandaddy. Backed by Pulido’s Midlake bandmates, egos are set aside for the greater good.
