Chairlift's sophomore LP is much more mature than the first to come from the New York indie pop band.
Something is the second full-length album by American indie band Chairlift in the United States via the Columbia Records on January 24, 2012, and in the United Kingdom via Young Turks on January 23, 2012. The first album since founding member Aaron Pfenning left the band in 2010, Something features production from Dan Carey and Alan Moulder. The first single, "Amanaemonesia", was released as a 7" on August 16, 2011 via Terrible Records
Chairlift's second full-length, Something, is a major creative leap, but on a superficial level, it's not that different from their debut. They're still mining uncool and untapped corners of 1980s pop for inspiration, and singer Caroline Polachek has doubled down on a vocal style that alternates between joyfully expressive and charmingly deadpan
If you gauge intelligence by vocabulary, then Chairlift’s Something is the brainiest pop album in some time. The first single from the duo’s sophomore album is Amanaemonesia, a real Scrabble championship winner of a word, if it were an actual word. Singer Caroline Polachek brainstormed the portmanteau, a hybrid of amnesia and Amanae, which is a quacky deep-tissue massage meant to knead away both muscular knots and emotional scars. The song, and the album as a whole, is centered around euphoria and forgetting.

Album · 2012 · 11 Songs. Slimmed down to a duo, Brooklyn’s Chairlift combines a sharp pop sensibility with eerie techno ambiance on its sophomore album, Something. Beneath the music’s sleek surfaces, Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly capture a sense of emotional volatility. Something's mood veers from the elegant melancholy of Cool as a Fire and Ghost Tonight to the jumpy angst of Amaneaemonesia and the surging, ominous thrust of Sidewalk Safari. The unearthly, echo-bathed Turning could fit comfortably on a David Lynch film soundtrack.
With Something, Chairlift haven't so much redefined their sound as papered over the cracks with an added coat of emulsion for good measure. This album is a genre in itself and everything that takes place on it is unique, thought out and impossible to forge, because no one has the vocals of Caroline Polachek, which is the body and the most wonderful vocal instrument. This album is a celebration of human abilities made by three geniuses. It is a pity that they are not working as a team, but they may have decided that the summit has been achieved and now it is time for their own projects.
Something" shows off Chairlift's eccentricities, but also a pure original, well written album that's very distinct opposed to any other record. I Belong In Your Arms" is the highlight track for me. All In All, Chairlift are a great pop band and "Something" has way more great tracks than just okay songs.
