What's that bright light in the sky? How come I never noticed it before? That's not a star at all, it's Venus, and it is awesome
First published in 2010, it is a follow-up to his 1998 book The Sopranos. The earlier novel followed a group of Catholic schoolgirls from a bleak town in the west coast of Scotland on a disastrous day trip to Edinburgh to participate in a national choir competition.
Stephen Briggs started out as a classically trained vocalist. His music teacher wanted him to learn to play an instrument and he chose the guitar. Influenced at first by the numerous superb bands of the 60’s-70’s, his guitar playing flourished later in the 80’s when he took inspiration from bands such as Jethro Tull, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Steve Hillage and Van Der Graf Generator. Tone has always been top of his list.
Much debauchery ensued. Now though, they've grown up (or at least got older!) and are gathered at Gatwick Airport to set off on a girls' holiday. The epigraph is from Kafka and Warner pitch perfectly uses the socially equalising, Kafkaesque effect of passengers in transit to bring his disparate group together. Events changed the characters and our perceptions of them. I can understand Warner's keenness to return to the gang, but while it does effectively send up the drinking youth culture, that's quite an easy target and I was left frustrated that the story didn't develop the characters.
Synopsis All her life Yang Zhen Zhen (Janice Wu) wants to be a pop artist. She works as a jack-of-all-trades at a major music agency, in the after hours she puts all her energy in talent shows. She never wins, but she decides to aid her former contest opponent Yu Zi Rui (Niu Jun Feng) to become a star one day. Zhen Zhen is friendly, optimistic, fighting for her beliefs. Really, how difficult can it be to portray a struggling artist who becomes a succes in the end, in his own right, without the help of his rich father, or agency? I won’t give any spoilers, you’ll have to see this for yourself. Another minor thing, the styling of the actors is great, but it pains me to see what they did to ZTao.

Alan Warner is one of Scotland's finest younger writers and this, his sixth novel, is a sequel to his acclaimed The Sopranos
Some appear very bright to us because they're relatively nearby, while others look bright because they're massive and very hot, pumping out lots of radiation. Some look dim because of their age, or because they're far away. There's no way to tell just by looking at a star what its age is, but we can tell brightness and use that to learn more.
