From Safer Place is the debut long-player from York-based Fawn Spots. Pulsating with a visceral tension, the album calls to mind the cathartic energy of Fugazi and Husker Du with the disparate post punk angularity of Joy Division and Mission of Burma; urgent and raw but keeping to a clear sense of melody. The albums title captures the bands existential angst and was borne out of the idea that growing older distances oneself from a place of security, propelling oneself into a position of ambivalence.

With a band name like Fawn Spots and album title like From Safer Place, you can’t blame us for expecting a modern-day, hip indie band. On the contrary what we found was a punk hardcore trio who has been making their rounds playing shows in sweaty, mangy pubs across the country. If the underground punk scene is your forte, chances are you might have run into them over the past couple of years. In between shows, the band managed to lock themselves away in sheds located in an abandoned Georgian garden outside their hometown of York to record their debut album.
Instead, From Safer Place, the band's first full-length album, unleashes an assault of hardcore and post-punk, as if rather from New York (or at least Brooklyn these trendy days). New Sense" roars straight at you, opening this short, intense album (less than 25 minutes), with anthemic back-and-forth vocals barked by songwriter Jonathan Meager. Joined on guitars and vocals by Oliver Grabowski, the pair capture the early '80s delivery of sharp, tuneful power. The pace sustains itself into "I'm Not a Man". Another race against time, as Fawn Spots crams in a penultimate blast. Basque Knife" wraps it up with great slabs of sound trundling back and forth, as the guitars chime over the pounding but adroit percussion. Finally, a voice enters.
