This record album is an anthology of what I believe to be the most exciting "live performances" captured, from a selection of the important bands who have been playing CBGB's in 1975 and 1976 - Hilly Kristal. Recorded June 4, 5, 6, 1976 at CBGB &OMFUG, 315 Bowery, . Live at CBGB's" is a fascinating relic of the mid-'70s New York underground rock explosion that soon became tagged with the woefully underdescriptive sobriquet "punk". True, the club's first-tier bands (Television, Patti Smith, Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, et a. are nowhere to be found on this comp, and there's a very good reason for that: they had already been signed to record deals. The purpose of "Live at CBGB's" was to showcase unsigned bands, and there's some fantastic material here.
The band self-released their second album, Five to Two, in 2005, which featured guest appearances from Alex Desert of Hepcat and King Django. The album was re-released by Stomp Records on March 14, 2006. Westbound Train were featured on the Hellcat Records compilation Give 'Em the Boot IV in November 2004. In January 2006, Hellcat announced that they had signed the band. A third full-length, titled Transitions, was released in September 2006

With their Hellcat Records debut, Westbound Train joins the ranks of such formidable acts as the Slackers, Hepcat, and the Aggrolites and demonstrates that their smooth, laid back trad-ska style fits right in with the rest of the Hellcat ska posse. Taking their name from legendary reggae artist Dennis Brown, Westbound Train are unquestionably qualified to carry on the title in the name of reggae and ska music. Please Forgive Me," the first song after the introduction, sets the pace for the rest of the album with an upbeat, ridiculously catchy melody and intricate composition of horns, keys, and jazzy guitar playing.
I love Westbound Train. Although I will say I haven't listened to them in maybe over a year. I'll get on that right now. Jan 16, 2009, 6:52 PM. Like.
