The four operas of Richard Wagner's cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen together take about 15 hours, which makes for several records, tapes, or CDs, and a lot of studio time. For this reason, many full Ring recordings are the result of "unofficial" recording of live performances, particularly from the Bayreuth Festival where new productions are often broadcast by German radio. Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), WWV 86B is the second of the four music dramas that constitute Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, (English: The Ring of the Nibelung). It was performed, as a single opera, at the National Theatre Munich on 26 June 1870, and received its first performance as part of the Ring cycle at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 14 August 1876.
First it was Keilberth at the helm drawing on a remarkable roster of artists, then Krauss in 1953, Keilberth again in 1954 and then Knappertsbusch took over from 1956 until Kempe in 1960. What a galaxy of talent amongst conductors and singers! Regulars included Astrid Varnay, Josef Greindl and of course Hans Hotter, in towering form in the 50's. I personally prefer Kna's massive, emphatic authority to Keilberth's more fleet and febrile manner but both are masters of the Wagnerian idiom.

Take this August 12, 1952, recording of Die Walküre from the Bayreuth Festival, the high temple of Wagner's art. Its cast is generally first-class, with Günther Treptow's youthfully heroic Siegmund, Inge Borkh's intensely passionate Sieglinde, Josef Greindl's robustly brutal Hunding, Hans Hotter's magnificently tragic Wotan, and Astrid Varnay's simply iridescent Brünnhilde.
