The Foundling is the seventh studio album by Country artist Mary Gauthier. All tracks composed by Mary Gauthier; except where indicated. Mary Gauthier - vocals, acoustic guitar. Jesse O'Brien - Wurlitzer, organ. Tania Elizabeth - fiddle. Ray Ferrugia - drums, percussion. Jaro Czerwinec - accordion. Danny Ellis - trombone. Margo Timmins - backing vocals. Josh Finlayson - guitar, bass, piano on "Mama Here, Mama Gone"; acoustic guitar on "Goodbye".
This disc is a companion to the album The Foundling Alone. Mixed and mastered by Ray Kennedy in Nashville, Tennessee, these are the bare bones voice/guitar demos that capture some of the moments when the songs came to life. The Foundling concept album was several years in the writing, and these tracks are a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process involved in the creation of that song cycle. This CD is for fans who are interested in the creative process.

The Foundling Lyrics. A baby A FOUNDLING Unwanted LOOKING Unloved and unblessed FOR Left on a doorstep HOME An unbidden guest WANDERS A shivering shadow THROUGH A child with no name DARKNESS Severed AND Surrendered TRAVELS Sinking in pain ALONE. Conceived in the gale of a ruinous storm Partially killed, partially born Abandoned, abandoned, falling through space With nobody's eyes and nobody's face A foundling.
The Foundling, 03:39. Mama Here, Mama Gone, 04:02.
This album is healing. Seriously one of the most beautiful collections of music I've ever heard. Listen to the lyrics, Mary Gauthier is one of the great talents of our time. Someone once called her the "female Johnny Cash. She's that, and so much more. The Foundling brought me to tears, and lifted to healing. One person found this helpful. If you want happy music, The Foundling may not be your best choice. But if you want music that makes you think about your life and big issues such as identity, family, and a sense of belonging, the CD belongs in your collection.
Mary Gauthier is straightforward about who this album is aimed at. She dedicates it t. ll adoptees, birth mothers, birth fathers and adoptive parents who still suffer. I think they might make up the majority of those who go for The Foundling. Mary was abandoned by her mother at birth. She found her, and they spoke briefly on the phone, but her mother refused to see her.
