He decided on the Bottom Line in New York, so to pay tribute to the city in which DeVille had honed his craft, and the Olympia in Paris, the city that made him a star. With the success of DeVille’s New Orleans recordings (see Ace’s Willy DeVille In New Orleans CD), Eddie Bo and three of the Wild Magnolias (Chief Bo Dollis, Chief Monk Boudreaux and Norwood Gitchie Johnson) were invited to join proceedings. The songs performed range across DeVille’s recording career with only ‘Hey! Joe’ and ‘Bamboo Road’ being from Backstreets. Live – subtitled Greatest Hits ’76-’93 – was released on CD and double vinyl late-1993 to strong sales, especially in France, Spain (where ‘Demasiado Corazon’ was a hit and Live topped the album chart), Switzerland, Germany and Holland. In France Live received the prestigious Prix de l’Académie Charles-Cros.

Willy DeVille, a singer and songwriter and the leader of the group Mink DeVille, whose adventurous forays into rhythm and blues, Cajun music and salsa made him one of the most original figures of the New York punk scene of the 1970s, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 58. The cause was pancreatic cancer, said his publicist, Carol Kaye. Mr. DeVille, a regular at CBGB in the mid-1970s, lent his bluesy voice and eclectic musical tastes to Mink DeVille, one of the club’s main draws

Live in The Lowlands. Willy DeVille is the founder, leader and principal songwriter of the band Mink DeVille. The band came out of the mid-70s New York punk scene but first broke worldwide with their hit Spanish Stroll in 1977. Their music belied their punk routes and mixed soul with R & B, blues and Cajun influences. The band continued to release albums through to the mid-80s when Willy began to perform and record under his own name.
Willy DeVille has remained active since the breakup of Mink DeVille in the mid-'80s. His debut solo album, Miracle, was produced in 1987 by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, and included such guests as guitarist Chet Atkins. One tune, "Storybook Love," used in Knopfler's score for the film The Princess Bride, was nominated for an Academy Award. Residing in New Orleans since the early '90s, DeVille featured the city's leading musicians, including Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, and Eddie Bo, on his 1990 album, Victory Mixture. Released in 2001, Live combined performances from the Bottom Line in New York and the Olympia Club in Paris. Live in Berlin, released two years later, featured the accompaniment of Seth Farber (piano, background vocals), Boris Kinberg (percussion), Freddy Koella (guitar, mandolin, vocals), David Keyes (bass, background vocals), and YaDonna Wise (background vocals).
