The 16-voice membership of the Bach Collegium Japan is optimal, and the Baroque instrumentalists, especially the brasses, have the precision that's happily typical of the series. All four cantatas presented here, although not the most splendid ones in the canon, are substantial pieces evidently intended for some kind of public event, and it is in the big outer choruses, with chorale melodies threaded so artfully into places where it hardly seems possible that they could appear, that Suzuki is at his best, with superbly clear textures.

Johann sebastian bach. O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe, BWV 34. 1. O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe (Chorus). Conductor: Suzuki, Masaaki. Johann sebastian bach. Choral: Bach Collegium Japan Chorus.

Recitative: Herr, unsre Herzen halten dir (Tenor) Johann Sebastian Bach; Robin Blaze; Satoshi Mizukoshi; Peter Kooij; Bach Collegium Japan Chorus; Bach Collegium Japan; Masaaki Suzuki. Approaching the end of their highly acclaimed cycle of Bach's complete cantatas, Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan released this 48th volume in 2011. Countertenor Robin Blaze and soprano Hana Blažíková were singled out by critics for their performances here, alongside tenor Satoshi Mizukoshi and bass Peter Kooij.

In 1995, when Masaaki Suzuki and his Bach Collegium Japan began the monumental journey of recording the cantatas, they decided to follow in Bach's footsteps. When Suzuki began his series of Bach cantata recordings, some critics voiced concerns that the results would be inauthentic. It was felt that cultural differences would yield mistakes in intonation, in expressiveness, in understanding and singing the text, even in instrumental performances. The first few discs of the series were greeted with a lukewarm response but Suzuki did not waver and continued the series.

Volume 48 of Masaaki Suzuki’s and Bach Collegium Japan’s traversal of Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas opens with Cantata 34, O ewiges Feuer, o Ursprung der Liebe – a jubilant work intended for Whit Sunday 1727, but with its origins in an earlier, secular wedding cantata. Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille (BWV 120) was composed for a festive church service marking the annual town council election in Leipzig.
