Douglas Craig "Doug" Bennett (October 31, 1951 – October 16, 2004) was the lead singer of Canadian rock band Doug and the Slugs. He also produced and directed music videos for artists such as Headpins, Trooper, Zappacosta, and Images in Vogue as well as for the Slugs themselves. Born in Toronto, Bennett moved to Vancouver in 1973. In 1977, he formed Doug and the Slugs and the band toured extensively through North America in the 1980s
Two Doug and The Slugs albums were issued via this deal, 1984's Popaganda and 1988's Tomcat Prowl, as well as a Doug Bennett solo album, 1986's Animato, on which all the Slugs played. The 1988 single "Tomcat Prowl" became the band's final top 40 entry, peaking at Ritdong's deal with A&M expired after Tomcat Prowl, and the group didn't record for several years. Doug and The Slugs' final album, 1992's Tales From Terminal City, came out on their own Tomcat Records label.
After four albums leading Doug & The Slugs, Animato represented singer Doug Bennett's solo debut. In the end, then, the major difference in the sound of Doug's ‘solo' record comes down to the adding the mighty Tower Of Power horns and a bevy of soulful female backing vocalists to Doug & The Slugs established beat combo sound.
