Album · 2011 · 13 Songs. Yet that’s just what outlaw blues/country/folk troubadour Scott H. Biram achieves with the stellar Bad Ingredients. A rave-up like Dontcha Lie to Me Baby shakes with a shattering power far beyond a one-man band. The recordings are often deliberately lo-fi, but with a stunning clarity for guitars that gives everything a desperate power.

Bad Ingredients Bundles.

That Bad Ingredients, Biram’s fourth studio album, happens to be his quietest and most mature effort doesn’t diminish the fact that it’s still an album of hard-living songs and straight-up filthy country and blues. The album’s centerpiece, Broke Ass, is a melancholy but insightfully observed song of political outrage that Biram disguises as a gentle, acoustic love song to a two-dollar whore. While the tone of Bad Ingredients is consistent, though, the quality of Biram’s songwriting isn’t. Songs like Open Road and Wind Up Blind make it clear that he understands the minimalism of country songwriting and the 12-bar structures of blues arrangements, but he also has a tendency to shoehorn the occasional longwinded or awkwardly worded phrase into a metric structure where it doesn’t fit.

Scott H. Biram aka The Dirty Old One Man Band (born April 4, 1974) is an American blues, punk, country, heavy metal musician, record producer, and ordained minister. He is primarily known as one of the prominent musicians of the one-man band musical genre.

Biram perfectly blends a deep reverence for American roots music with an irreverent outlook on life and punky snarl. No one else so effortlessly flips from destructive stompers to mournful ballads.

Scott Biram’s Something’s Wrong/Lost Forever was a powerful album of music ranging from field holler spiritual to stompin’ blues punk; abundantly well-written, and bearing that unmistakable Biram panache of gravel, blood and tears. A song like "Still, Drunk, Still Crazy, Still Blue" is exemplary. As an anthem, it is to a contemporary underground garage, blues, alt-country crowd what Paul Simon’s otherwise praiseworthy G-rated effort of a similar title was to the Big Chill generation  . I don’t mean to imply that Bad Ingredients is an album encompassing numerous genres from blues to hip-hop and ska. However, it is the most musically diverse album Biram has produced to date. That itself doesn’t necessarily make a great album, of course. Yet, it is a great album.
