Album · 2011 · 10 Songs. Her throaty contralto leaves us breathless on one inspired track after another. Gritty tunes like the down-and-dirty bluegrass number "Scarlet Town" feel like portals into another time and place, while sultry ballads like "Dark Turn of Mind" combine traditional blues structures with delicate, country-style harmonies, reminding us that Ms. Welch can't be categorized-she's simply one of a kind. It has been eight long years since Gillian Welch's last album, 2003's Soul Journey – a gap that prompts the inevitable question from those in thrall to the post-Appalachian lull of this Nashville-based duo. What have they been doing? Preparing the ground, you might conclude. Welch and her long-term partner Dave Rawlings have toured in the interim, and she has worked with the Decemberists. It is replete with events alluded to, but unsung. Many of their albums are like this – carefully written to sound like folk manuscripts handed down across the ages, illuminated by Rawlings's eloquent guitar. And yet The Harrow is especially full of drama that occurs off-camera. It is the best kind of record: one that lures you in and soothes you with harmonies and banjo, only to leave you wondering what the hell just happened.

On The Harrow & the Harvest, Welch and Rawlings are working at that level. She makes the very difficult seem effortless. A voice that perfectly matches a genre. Lazy, moody, dark and deep Harrow & the Harvest will transport you to another place and time. Tennessee", "The Way" trio, "Scarlet Town" all of the tracks on the CD flow like journey through a cool dark misty dream. These are some of the best storytellers making music today.
On the first album under her own name for eight years, however, Welch goes back to basics, creating the kind of uitars music you might expect to hear coming from a Tennessee front porch (assuming it was occupied by two flawless musicians who harmonise beautifully)
