Weed Garden is never quite so purposeful or prescient. We do get to glimpse novel facets of Iron & Wine, like Milkweed, whose melody seems to dissipate even as the words leave Beam’s mouth. On the other hand, we also get songs like Last of Your Rock ‘n’ Roll Heroes, whose folk-funk groove is an ungainly as its flippancy toward its titular subject. Perhaps that’s why What Hurts Worse stands out: Rather than offering a new trick by this old shepherd’s dog, it reinforces what makes Iron & Wine so distinctive.
As a bonus to longtime Iron & Wine fans, the EP also contains the first official release of a live staple, "Waves of Galveston," which was first done for the . Club and their State Songs project in 2013. Beam and the band give the song a typically sensitive reading, and the vocal harmonies are truly lovely. Weed Garden is a nice little diversion, and finds both Beam and the band he oversees at the top of their long-running game.
This EP collects extra Iron & Wine tracks written for 2017’s Beast Epic, with the same lineup helping Sam Beam extend that album’s cosier-is-better ethic, digging deeper into themes of mortality and solace. The tracks range from playful ( Last of Your Rock ’n’ Roll Heroes ) to intimate ( Talking to Fog ). This EP also contains the first studio recording of live favourite Waves of Galveston, a tasty bonus tossed into a hot bag of beignets. Weed Garden serves as an easy entry point for both Iron & Wine newbie and hardcore faithful. Weed Garden - EP Iron & Wine.
Iron & Wine are following up their 2018 Grammy-nominated full-length Beast Epic with the aptly titled EP, Weed Garden. The six-song EP features material that was part of the writing phase for Beast Epic, but for various reasons went unfinished
Iron & Wine Remind That We Have to Change Ourselves Before We Can Change the World on 'Weed Garden'. Christopher Thiessen. Sam Beam is still able to express that nostalgic combination of melancholy and hope, even when taking a safe approach to songwriting on Weed Garden. Sub Pop. 31 August 2018. But if the message of this opening track seems a bit "easier said than done", mid-album track "Milkweed" offers an unfortunate explanation for our stunted growth. Over beautifully tragic chamber folk orchestrations reminiscent of the melancholic "Eleanor Rigby", Beam reminds the listener that "the summer leaves are afraid of changing, coming back for something. As the butterflies return to milkweeds, the sustenance of their youth, so we too often lead cyclical lives, always nostalgic for past sources of happiness instead of seeking out new joys.
