The Mercy Seat" is a song written by Nick Cave (lyrics and music) and Mick Harvey (music), originally performed by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on the 1988 album Tender Prey. The song has been covered by others, including Johnny Cash, Camille O'Sullivan and Unter Null. The song tells the story of a man about to be executed by the electric chair
Recalling a tribute Cave recently wrote about the Locomotion singer (who duetted with Cave on the Australian Number Two hit Where the Wild Roses Grow ), he remembered her texting habits. The amount of exclamation marks she uses in a tex. t’s fucking unbelievable. It’s like the words are even broken up with exclamation marks. 8. Recording with Johnny Cash was an eye-opening experience. When I was asked to go into the studio and record with Johnny, I was terrified about what to record, he said. Nicholas Edward Cave, or ‘Nick Cave, is the lead vocalist and percussionist of the Australian punk rock band Nick cave and the Bad Seeds. He is known for writing dark themed songs about violence, death and religion- therefore tagged as the Prince of Darkness. He was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Cave has received various accolades such as MTV Europe Music Awards, APRA Music Awards and MOJO Awards. He has also collaborated with heavy metal band such as Metallica and Arctic Monkeys.
Nick Cave and I are cruising down a highway north of Sydney towards a show with his band the Bad Seeds in the coastal steel-town of Newcastle, when he turns to me and says: We’re going to have to talk about Arthur for this, aren’t we? It’s late January, and tonight’s show is part of an Australian tour that marks Cave’s first live performances since the death of his 15-year-old son, who fell from a cliff in Brighton back in July 2015 after experimenting with LS. Trying to meet Cave eye-to-eye in any conversation about his lost son Arthur induces a feeling akin to stage fright. Yet he has been relentlessly upbeat for the shows on this tour so far, as if released of a burden and obviously glad to be performing again. Seeing him backstage after these sprawling and exultant shows, there’s a spark and warmth in his eyes and in his conversation, too.
Much of the work that has defined Cave's career of more than 40 years in music - first with Boys Next Door, which became the Birthday Party, then later with the Bad Seeds and also as a prolific solo artist - might be described as the vivid narratives of a shamanistic balladeer. Or crumbling in tears in the arms of concerned strangers. When did you become an object of pity?" he asks himself. For an artist who has always inhabited a persona, the intimate exposure here is quite startling. Dominik closes on a note of eloquent simplicity, with a sequence of face-forward shots of everyone involved in the production of the album and film, ending with the Cave family before cutting to footage of the cliff where Arthur fell.
