Slava Grigoryan's first solo album in 15 years is well worth the wait. It is also the first solo album on which he plays a baritone guitar, even though he’s owned one for 12 years. But as he notes in the booklet accompanying this release of the first three: The moment I touched this beast, I thought of Bach’s Cello Suites. The baritone guitar is tuned a fifth lower than the standard classical guitar. Bach’s Cello Suites are thus able to be performed in their original keys. Grigoryan plays a Jim Redgate double-top baritone from 2011; he also chose the wonderful acoustic of South Australia’s concert venue UKARIA in which to record
Slava Grigoryan (guitar). Grigoryan again chooses the richly resonant baritone guitar for Volume II, whose lower pitch allows the Suites to be performed in their original keys. The Sixth Suite was, however, originally written for an instrument a fifth higher than the cello - the same degree higher as a classical guitar from the baritone. As such, Grigoryan performs the Sixth Suite on a standard classical guitar. The musical challenges of these three Suites are considerable. Praise for bach cello suites volume I. Winner – ARIA Award for Best Classical Album, 2017. Winner – AIR Award for Best Independent Classical Album, 2017.
