There is a later version from 1977 that I haven't heard, From The Kitchen, Archives No. 2: Steve Reich and Musicians, Live 1977. Because the better sonics afford Piano Circus more clarity and sparkle, it is their recording I prefer. Riley's in C is an open form. He leaves it to the performers to make the choices of tempo, dynamics, duration of the work, and even number of performers and instrumentation.

Piano Circus are currently Associate Artists at Brunel University, London, where they have been working with composer Colin Riley and, through him, drummer Bill Bruford. Jan Brauer mixed "Six Pianos" in the studio while Lukas Vogel provided delays for the "Keyboard Study "Keyboard Study by Terry Riley is a worthy companion for Reich's composition. The piece is kind of a building set of ever lengthening, repetitive patterns played against each other with the right and left hand displaced. The composition proposes various possible combinations for the performer to choose from and repeat at will.
