Robin Hood is a legendary heroic outlaw originally depicted in English folklore and subsequently featured in literature and film. According to legend, he was a highly skilled archer and swordsman. In some versions of the legend, he is depicted as being of noble birth, and in modern time he is sometimes depicted as having fought in the Crusades before returning to England to find his lands taken by the Sheriff. In the oldest known versions he is instead a member of the yeoman class.
The tale of Robin Hood is one of the most enduring legends of all time. People have been hearing and telling stories about this lincoln green clad outlaw for centuries and with good reason. Let’s face it; the tale of Robin Hood is a good one. Many versions give us intrigue, excitement, violence, love, philanthropy and more. This is just the kind of story that people love to hear. Much of what we know about Robin today did not exist when he was first mentioned in the pages of history (mostly in ballads). For example, Maid Marion did not exist in the earlier texts, so it is doubtful that if any of the Robin Hood tale is real that she would be part of it. The earliest mentions of Robin Hood say he was a man of the middle-class, so we can probably exclude any knights or nobleman. Many of the Merry Men were added in later years as well.
Robin Hood is a famous English hero of folk tales and ballads. In the legends it was said that he and his friends robbed in the Sherwood forest, robbed the rich and gave money to the poor. Robin Hood was considered an unsurpassed archer, the authorities could not catch him. Ballads about this hero were built up in the XIV century. Based on them already today, written a lot of books about Robin Hood, filmed a lot of films.
Robin Hood, previously known as Robin of Locksley, was the Lord of Locksley and the Earl of Huntingdon. He was seen as a hero across Nottinghamshire for giving up his own titles to save the peasants of Locksley and across Nottinghamshire. Often seen by his men as thoughtful and brave, he is also known for being arrogant, naive, and for risking other people's lives for his own glory.
Chapter 1: Robin Hood becomes an Outlaw. Robin Hood was born near the end of the 12th century. His real name was Robert. He was the son of the Earl① of Huntingdon. At that time, England had many problems. King Richard was away on a crusade② in the Holy Land③. He was away many years. His brother, John, became king. He was a cruel and greedy④ king. His men were arrogant⑤ and brutal⑥. The poor people of England suffered a lot. They paid very high taxes to King John and his sheriffs⑦.
So Robin took to the greenwood of Sherwood Forest, making a living by stealing from rich travellers and distributing the loot among the poor of the area. In the process he gained a band of followers and a spouse, Maid Marian. Despite the best efforts of the evil Sherrif of Nottingham he avoided capture until the return of King Richard from the Crusades brought about a full pardon and the restoration of Robin's lands. In other versions he dies at the hands of a kinswoman, the abbess of Kirklees Priory. One thing to note about the early legends is that Robin Hood was not an aristocrat, as he was later portrayed, but a simple yeoman driven to a life of crime by the harsh rule of the law of the rich. As such, it is easy to see how his story soon became a favourite folk tale among the poor. There is, in the grounds of Kirklees Priory, a old grave stone, marking the final resting place of one "Robard Hude".
