Features Song Lyrics for Lou Reed's American Poet Live 1972 album.
Lou Reed is the debut solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed, released in April 1972 by RCA Records, two years after he left the Velvet Underground.
American Poet is an album of an early solo concert by Lou Reed, recorded live at the Hempstead Theatre, New York, on Boxing Day 1972 during the Transformer tour. The backing band are the Tots. It features material from that album, the Velvet Underground, and his 1972 solo debut Lou Reed. The version of "Berlin" is from that debut album. American Poet was released in 2001. It had previously been released as a bootleg recording. The album's cover photo is by Mick Rock, evidently from the same shoot that yielded the Transformer cover. All tracks composed by Lou Reed.
Since 1989's New York, Lou Reed has been a politically correct elder statesman of rock. Early on, though, he was the very essence of cutting edge, a time captured perfectly on American Poet. Recorded for a 1972 radio broadcast right after his return from England where he'd just recorded Transformer with the Ziggy Stardust crew, Lou and band deliver four tunes from that album sans the pop sheen David Bowie and Mick Ronson added.
It was recorded during a 1972 show for Reed’s Transformer tour, and provides listeners with a glimpse of his remarkable live presence. Instead of crumbling under the faulty sound quality, Reed leads the band - and the audience - through a repeatedly fierce, enjoyable show.
