Playing the Angel is the eleventh studio album by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. It was released on 13 October 2005 in Japan, on 17 October in the United Kingdom by Mute Records, and on 18 October in the United States, Mexico and Canada by Sire Records and Reprise Records. It was supported by the Touring the Angel tour. Playing the Angel is the first Depeche Mode album to feature lead singer Dave Gahan as co-writer.

This October, Depeche Mode release their first album since 2001's two million-selling Exciter. I really felt, before we started this album, that there was unfinished business," says Dave Gahan of their 11th studio album, Playing The Angel. And so it is that the world's foremost subversive electronic pop group have reconvened to, as the singer puts it, "make the best record we ca. They just can't shake the disease.

Released October 13, 2005. Playing The Angel Tracklist. 1. A Pain That I'm Used To Lyrics. The eleventh studio record by Depeche Mode, released in October of 2005, sees them continuing down the path of heavy electro-pop mixed with sky-high choruses and infectious melodies. Lead single Precious is the perfect example of how DM have matured in sound without losing their signature traits. 4 singles were released, with Precious the most successful, charting in the Billboard Hot 100 and going on to be a hit worldwide, making it to the top 10 in 13 countries. I think we’re generally a lot more happy with this new album. We feel that the quality goes all the way through. Hopefully, we’ve taken it forward another stage. Playing The Angel Q&A.

When Ultra was declared the best Depeche Mode album since Violator, those who said so must have forgotten about Songs of Faith and Devotion. When Exciter was declared the best Depeche Mode album since Violator, those who said so must have also forgotten about Songs of Faith and Devotion, in addition to having found a roundabout way of saying that it was merely better than Ultra. There's no doubt this time: Playing the Angel is both the band's best album since Violator and, more significantly, an album that is near Violator in stature

After years of waiting I finally acquired this album in vynl. The sound is really good:- very detailed eagle does not saturate.-Bass good without perfect excessesThe set is excellent it feels good to the ears contraierement CD that is horrible.I just have the C / D face that is slightly veiled but it does not matter the listeningI also have "Spirit" which is very good.PS: Thanks to "sherbethead" for this info

their singles from that album are good but the other songs are okay or boring JOHN THE REVELATOR sounds like an updated PERSONAL JESUS while PRECIOUS sounds like an updated ENJOY THE SILENCE

Something weird about this album on SACD for me... Back in 2005, when kids were sharing music over bluetooth, I had received a file called Precious.mp3. I've stumbled across it recently when digging through my old hard drives, and decided to plug it into iZotope for laughs.Turns out, that no-breed bastard mp3 had been a SACD rip! Meaning, someone had the audacity to buy a SACD player, buy this album, plug it into their PC, record the thing (no scad rippers yet) and release it into the wild.No-name hero, I salute your dedication.

Any experiences about the sound quality of this reissue ?
Perilanim
Yes, it sounds great, much better than the brick walled CD.
Painshade
Songs are so-so - nice enough, but doesnt matter due to the fact that the album is sonically ruined and effectively unlistenable (see other comments related to horrible mastering/loudness war)

thinking of buying this one because the CD sounds very compressed does anyone know if the sound is much better on this new vinyl? cheers!
Quinthy
Sounds great , a few crackles during the quieter moments but this is an album that truly thrives on vinyl

Yes, just bought it and the quality is perfect. :)

The DVD with the 5.1 and PC Stereo Mix really makes the difference and gives you an idea how it could or should have sounded. If you can manage to transfer it to MP3 or Flac, you'll hear it within the first 20 seconds.

I have to confess that I was not familiar with Depeche Mode’s newer material (post Violator). I am listening to the albums, and reviewing them, in order as I add the vinyl versions to my collection. I wasn’t very satisfied with Ultra and Exciter in particular, so I was ready for an album from the band that I would like more. It was reported that Playing The Angel was a more organic album on which the band used more analogue synths, so I was hopeful.I was greeted right from the start with a track, “A Pain That I’m Used To”, that was exciting and musically interesting. Their new sound was much more gritty and harsh—I liked it, I liked it a lot! The fun didn’t stop there; the album continued with more tracks that had a fantastic groove and made me want to sing along to them. Depeche Mode was back! I have to say that some of the songs (like “Precious”) were familiar to me as they had some radio play. The lineup for this album was Andy Fletcher (keyboards), Martin Gore (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Dave Gahan (lead vocals), Christian Eigner (programming), Dave McCraken (programming, piano) & Andrew Phillpott (programming). The character on the album cover is a little creature called "Tubby Goth" (by the band) and "Mister Feathers" (by the label, the webmaster and the fans). The cover design by Anton Corbijn is believed to be a tip of the hat to a famous still photograph of The Cure's Robert Smith circa "Boys Don't Cry".Playing the Angel is Depeche Mode's first album to feature Dave Gahan as co-writer. He wrote the lyrics to "Suffer Well", "I Want It All" and "Nothing's Impossible", while Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott wrote the music. Gahan is the lead singer on all songs except for the instrumental "Introspectre", and Martin Gore-sung tracks "Macro" and "Damaged People". Gahan also sings backing vocals on "Macro", which was the first time he had sung backing on one of Gore's songs since Violator's "Sweetest Perfection".This pressing of Playing The Angel was beautifully produced (Ben Hillier), mastered and pressed (Rhino Entertainment Company). The double record came in a very nice gatefold jacket with full-color card stock record sleeves with photos, credits & lyrics. The record had a very good signal level (-1.5 dB) and was dead whisper quiet, with virtually no surface noise, clicks or pops. The credits list Emily Lazar, at the Lodge, New York as being responsible for the mastering. Lazar is known to produce awful masters and her name has become synonymous with heavy-handed dynamic range compression. She is responsible for the red book CD version of this album which suffered from vey heavy dynamic range compression. This vinyl version, however, does not. A careful inspection of the waveform of the digitally recorded version of this vinyl copy shows that it has minimal dynamic range compression. It is doubtful that Lazar mastered this version and some other un-credited party is responsible.I gave this album 5 out of 5 stars.//Paul Rolan Perkes

This is the worst Depeche Mode release I have ever heard. I like maybe one song and I'm so disappointed I bought this.

I think its by far one of their best latter albums ????

It's a shame that the mastering(as it was previously mentioned) for both the CDDA & DVD tracks is a mess, not very enjoyable. So I ripped the SACD content for myself, hoping... It worked!SACD mastering is fine, after a little levelling/amplifying/converting into more convenient format & it sounds far better.

I did not even realized but thanks for the info, it seems you are right about the mastering!

One of the best DM albums. Even the songs Martin Gore sings are less painful then they usually are. This album has way more balls then some people would like. If you are into the horribly cheesy Ultra and Exciter you will want to stay away from this one but if you want your DM with some industrial and goth edge to it then check this out.

"If you are into the horribly cheesy Ultra and Exciter..."I've never really been a fan of Exciter, but Ultra is a fantastic album. Cheesy? Are you sure you're not thinking of Speak & Spell?...

This album is not even worth having!! It is album with songs you will never remember when you have heard them. None of them will get stuck on your mind!!! By now DM should have lay of their hat and leave the music scene to someone else?? The two first albums were a revolution at the music scene and some albums after that but now they are an average band that has no soul or stick from other bands. Make us a favor and quit now so other better bands can take over!!!

The worst mastered Depeche Mode record. Vinyl has a bit better sound, but the outrageous LP prices don't reflect the exact "improvement" over the CD version. To me, this record needs a total new stereo mix. The songs don't help either: they're the most industrial DM tracks to date. Nothing wrong with that but why the need for the first 4 tracks to sound like pure Nine Inch Nails? And there is no excuse to leave out "potential A-Sides" that were eventually set as B-Sides, "Free" and "Newborn" out of the record in favour of stuff like "I Want It All" and "John The Revelator". Still waiting for a proper remastered version with the B-Sides as bonus tracks.

LP1 A side, for me is a little bit greasy, i don know, but i guess, its a recording issue.Other 3 sides is correct, better than cd versions.

This album suffers greatly from it's mastering at such high loudness levels which gives the music a very artificial and flat sound. Looking at the waveforms of the songs shows virtually every one pushed up to maximum levels throughout resulting in all peaks clipped, producing little subtlety and no relenting from a wall of noise. A foghorn deluge opens one of the worst culprits in A Pain That I'm Used To followed by the equally unforgiving John The Revelator, both decent enough songs but with no space to breath and little variation in levels throughout, just noise. Later tracks seem better until a sharp stab of bass seems to overcome everything, a noise from the background seems to suddenly jump wildly in volume (The Sinner In Me) or the chorus is just pushed so high that you want to turn it down (Suffer Well/Precious/Macro). Precious is the most accessible and commercially popular song but not the easiest to listen to due to the overbearing height to which everything is pushed. The intricacies of sound are often very much lost. Being two of the quieter songs, I Want It All and Nothing's Impossible, should, in the context of the album, be a respite from the loudness but, in the latter’s case especially, it is almost as if the sound is muffled as well as being muted with vocals pushed far back in the mix which muddies the track. The album credits show the mastering to be by Emily Lazar of The Lodge and, from experience and research, that name seems synonymous with the "Loudness War" (http://www.sharoma.com/loudness_war.htm / http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/15278-shame-list-bad-redbook-cd-transfers/ ). BT's album, These Hopeful Machines (http://www.discogs.com/BT-These-Hopeful-Machines/release/2188060 ), is one example that suffers due to Lazar's over-loud mastering and resultant compression of sound levels and detail. It is a shame that this album wasn’t treated more sympathetically, it would have made for a far better listening experience. Some good songs and good vocal performances are hidden away in the sonic boom.

It is stunning in this world that the more you are professionally mediocre, the more you succeed in big affairs. Lazar is an example of that.

This album is excellent. A nice blend of alternative electronics and rock. To me this Depeche Mode's best album right behind 'Sounds Of The Universe', 'Black Celebration', 'Violator' and 'Some Great Reward'. It could easily be at the top of the list. It will be considered a classic in ten years. The first single 'Precious' is already a classic. Right up there with other big DM hits like 'Enjoy The Silence', 'People Are People', 'It's No Good' and 'Personal Jesus'. All the singles off this album are excellent, and should have been huge hits, but DM are one of the most under-rated band out there, despite their many fans. My favorite track off this album is: 'Nothing's Impossible', followed by 'Suffer Well'. The whole album is good, and also check out the B-sides to the singles. They were also excellent!

Playing The Angel is the best DM album since Songs Of Faith And Devotion. It has a good concept (pain in various tempos or sth. like that), and the songs reflects the whole idea on the album. The opener, "A Pain That I'm Used To", and "Nothing's Impossible" (written by Dave Gahan) are my favourites. The only thing that upsets me in the album is the Martin-vocal track "Macro". Although it's still a good song, it could have been much better; and could have become one of the best DM songs which Martin is on the vocal. A little note: Martyr (which is the new single for Best Of) was the first recorded track for Playing The Angel, but the album doesn't contains the song: Because DM thinks that Playing The Angel is such a dark album that Martyr is not a good choice to be on the album. I just can't understand that actually, because the 4th single John The Revelator is a fast-paced track either. Anyway, the album is very well and worth buying. 8.5/10.
